This year's session of RTC North America brought together the sharpest speakers sharing their latest developments and innovations on Design Technology. So Young will distill for us her take on the event and a summary of what was presented on the Dynamo front.
Feature Presentation: Space Plan Generator

More often than not, architectural design is constrained by the pressures of tight deadlines and the difficulty in locating and applying the necessary expertise at just the right moment to a project. By combining algorithms (from computational geometry & generative design) implementing professional expertise with project requirements and conditions, Architects can foresee a new ear of augmented design decisions. Expanding the ability to rapidly evaluate many more possibilities than ever before to aid informed decision making at the early stages of a project. This 'Automated Space Plan Generator' project developed in Autodesk Dynamo visual programming environment, integrates site conditions, program requirements, and the expertise of Perkins+Will's health care planners to automate some aspect of the explicit and implicit knowledge base which can be reused across projects of different scale and genre. The system is further being tested to design a bed tower addition to an existing healthcare facility on a tightly constrained site, with client requirements to maximize final patient bed count and connectivity to the existing hospital, while complying with a new set of facility design guidelines and local building codes.
Perkins+Will, Georgia Tech, and Autodesk are creating Space Plan Generator (SPG) - a method and tool to help design teams define program requirements, and semi-automatically generate and analyze large numbers of space plans. Developed on the highly adaptable and extensible Dynamo visual platform, SPG improves design exploration, performance integration and decision communication.
Subhajit Das has diverse background in Architecture and Computer Science with degree in M Arch Design Computing, University of Pennsylvania and MS Computer Science, Georgia Tech. Previously he has worked with firms like Atkins, UNStudio, Mad Architects in USA and China bringing in expertise in advanced computational design and building information modeling. Currently, he is pursuing PhD in Computer Science at Georgia Tech with core interests in Machine Learning, Computational Graphics and Design Automation.
